Adventure Unveiled: Exploring Ninh Binh’s Charm
Day 1: Hanoi – Ninh Binh – Tam Coc – Hoa Lu (-/L/D)
Embark on an early morning journey from Hanoi, embracing a 2½-hour drive to the enchanting town of Ninh Binh. Renowned for its captivating landscapes, historical mysteries, religious sanctuaries, and wildlife havens, Ninh Binh unfolds as one of Vietnam’s gems. While the town itself may not boast overt attractions, it serves as the perfect gateway for captivating day trips.
Upon arrival in Ninh Binh, engage in discussions about the day’s adventures while savoring a refreshing drink. The exploration kicks off with a car ride to Tam Coc, where the rice fields of Ninh Binh transform into a surreal landscape. Dubbed “Halong Bay without water,” Tam Coc is characterized by limestone karsts dominating the scenery. Embark on a boat journey through the Three Caves, weaving past impressive cliffs, tiny villages, and solitary farming communities.
Around Tam Coc, indulge in local culinary delights at excellent restaurants. Opt for specialties like ‘mien luon’ (eel in noodle soup), ‘ca ghem muoi’ (local pickled vegetables), or ‘thit de nuong’ (grilled goat) for a delightful lunch (own account).
Post-lunch, prepare for a bicycle tour of Hoa Lu with assistance from your guide. The 24km round trip unfolds a mesmerizing panorama of rice fields, karst mountains, and charming rural villages. Passing by radiant lime kilns sustained by limestone mining, delve into the history of Hoa Lu, the former capital after Chinese rule in the first millennium. Though the capital no longer stands, the allure lies in the ancient temples dating back to the 17th century, the King’s Tomb, and the simple rural life.
Conclude the cycling adventure, returning to your hotel for a well-deserved break and a chance to explore Ninh Binh’s local markets, where typical Vietnamese trade thrives away from the tourist crowds.
Day 2: Ninh Binh- Phat Diem/ Kenh Ga- Cuc Phuong National Park (B/L/D)
As you enjoy breakfast, your guide will join you to outline the day’s possibilities.
Option 1 – Phat Diem:
Embark on a 28km bicycle journey through picturesque rural landscapes, unveiling grand rural churches and a rare Japanese covered bridge. Upon reaching Phat Diem village, take a refreshing break in one of the local cafes. The streets of Phat Diem beckon exploration with numerous sewing shops, a vibrant local market, and the majestic Catholic Cathedral, a pinnacle of Vietnamese Catholicism. Constructed by French Jesuits, the cathedral harmonizes Chinese and Western styles in its solid grey stone and wood architecture. Its serene gardens and magnificent bell towers draw Vietnamese Catholics from neighboring dioceses. After touring Phat Diem, your private transport awaits for a return drive to Ninh Binh.
Option 2 – Kenh Ga:
Embark on a 21km bicycle ride through striking rural scenery. Arriving in Kenh Ga, your guide will arrange a private boat for an exploration that transcends the typical. Often referred to as “Halong Bay with rice fields,” Kenh Ga captivates with its undiscovered natural beauty. Navigate past spectacular limestone mountains emerging from the rice fields and a meandering river. The boat tour extends beyond the floating village, offering glimpses of cliff-side homes along the river, accompanied by smiling, waving children and mothers paddling with babies in tow. Explore a water-carved cave adorned with millennia-old mineral and rock formations.
Following the Kenh Ga adventure, return to Ninh Binh for lunch. Post-lunch, embark on a 45km journey to Cuc Phuong National Park, passing pineapple farms, rural villages, and scenic landscapes. At the park’s entrance, explore the informative Visitor Information Centre. Cuc Phuong NP beckons with diverse hikes, encounters with ethnic minority groups, the Endangered Primate Rescue Centre, and rare wildlife.
Late afternoon offers an optimal time for a short trek within the NP. Choose from public treks like the ‘Ancient Tree trek’ or the ‘Thousand Year Old Tree trek,’ varying in difficulty based on your preference. Your guide will provide insights into the trek’s difficulty. Overnight stay in Cuc Phuong National Park.
Day 3: Cuc Phuong National Park – Ninh Binh – Hanoi (B/L/-)
Begin your day with a hearty breakfast before embarking on a journey to the ‘Cave of Prehistoric Man,’ a site where locals continue to pay homage to prehistoric artifacts discovered within its depths.
Leaving the National Park, a unique opportunity awaits for a guided tour of the Endangered Rescue Primate Centre, led by a German zoologist. Home to 15 out of Vietnam’s 25 primate species, including the exceptionally rare Cat Ba Langur, this center serves as a rehabilitation haven before primates are reintroduced to the National Park.
Driving back to Ninh Binh, relish the captivating scenery of Hoa Lu. Upon reaching Ninh Binh, consider enjoying lunch at a local restaurant (personal expense). Post-lunch, your private transport awaits to commence the return journey to Hanoi. Arrive back in Hanoi and conclude your trip with a drop-off at your hotel.
